Reporting to the Surgery Center Administrator, the Staff Nurse is responsible for the direct care of the surgical patient within the licensed scope of practice and surgery center. This is a part time position, expected to work up to 25 hours per week, 8-10 hour shifts.

Primary Responsibilities

Patient Care:

  • Identifies the patient using 2 different identifiers
  • Checks patient identification bed sheet and compares the name with the chart and name label
  • Verifies allergies
  • Verifies physicians orders
  • Physiologically monitors the patient
    • Obtains vital signs
    • Assesses/monitors physical symptoms
    • Assesses/monitors behavioral changes
    • Initiates nursing actions based on interpretation of physiological changes
  • Assesses the psycho-social health status of the patient/family
    • Elicits the perception of surgery
    • Elicits the expectation of care
    • Determines coping mechanisms
    • Determines knowledge level
    • Determines the ability to understand
    • Identifies philosophical, ethnic and religious beliefs/practices
    • Provides patient care appropriate to age specific needs
  • Demonstrates awareness of the individual rights of the patient
    • Provides for privacy through maintaining confidentiality
    • Provides for privacy through physical protection
    • Communicates/documents provisions for patients rights
  • Identifies teaching needs of patient/family
    • Assesses readiness to learn
    • Provides instruction based on identified needs and considers barriers, if applicable
    • Determines teaching effectiveness
    • Communicates/documents patient/family teaching
  • Provides for patient safety throughout the perioperative process
    • Escorts or transports patients safely
  • Provides physical comfort for the patient
  • Appropriately documents all aspects of care in the medical record
  • Communicates the patients status to other healthcare team members

 

CLINICAL FUNCTIONS

Laser Room:

  • Verifies procedure with patient, physician order and with signed consent; obtains consent if necessary
  • Demonstrates safe use and handling of equipment, including trouble shooting
  • Exercises safety precautions during laser procedures
  • Provides for equipment and supplies based on patient needs
  • Monitors the IOP as required and treats according to physician orders, if necessary
  • Documents the number of laser shots and the Mill joules appropriately
  • Cleans and disinfects the lens and prepares for patient use
  • Reviews the discharge instructions with patient prior to procedure
  • Directs patient to post-op area and ensures post-op nurse is notified

 

Pre-Procedure:

  • Verifies procedure with patient, physician order and with signed consent; obtains consent if necessary
  • Notes sensory and physical impairments
  • Coordinates nursing care relative to patients medical history
  • Initiates IV access per physician orders

 

Operating Room: ¨ N/A

  • Prepares equipment appropriate for patient and procedure based on patient needs
  • Verifies correct patient, correct procedure, correct physician and correct lens power, if applicable
  • Demonstrates the ability to position and prep the patient for procedure
  • Correctly grounds patient for electrosurgical safety
  • Handles tissue specimens correctly and accurately
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of equipment utilized during procedure
  • Demonstrates appropriate disinfection of equipment after use
  • Demonstrates ability to create and maintain a sterile field
    • uses principles of aseptic technique
    • initiates corrective action when breaks in technique occur
    • inspects sterile items for contamination before opening
  • Demonstrates ability to perform sharps and instrument counts
    • follows established policies and procedures for counts
    • initiates corrective actions when counts are incorrect
    • communicates results of counts appropriately

 

Recovery Room:

  • Assesses pain level post-operatively
  • Assesses patient findings utilizing Aldrete scoring system
  • Ensures patient has transportation for discharge
  • Discharges patient according to established criteria

 

Medication Administration:

  • Obtains physicians order prior to administration of any medication
  • Verifies patients allergies
  • Verifies Correct Patient, Correct Medication, Correct Dosage, and Correct Route according to policy and procedures
  • Administers medications according to physicians order and licensed scope of practice
  • Administers medications correctly and accurately
  • Communicates/documents administration of medications, including IV fluids

 

Infection Control:

  • Wears appropriate attire according to facility policy
  • Follows universal precautions (i.e. handwashing)
  • Uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) according to policy and need
  • Practices recognized principles of cleanliness and sanitation
  • Correctly disposes of sharps
  • Correctly handles hazardous and contaminated materials

 

Emergency Situations:

  • Demonstrates the ability to function in emergency situations
    • Ensures that emergency equipment is available at all times
    • Practices life saving support measures as needed
    • Demonstrate understanding of emergency equipment and malfunction
  • Demonstrates knowledge of fire safety
  • Demonstrates knowledge of facility disaster plan

 

Equipment and Supplies:

  • Anticipates the need for equipment and supplies
  • Assures all equipment is functioning before use
  • Removes malfunctioning equipment from use, if applicable, and labels it accordingly
  • Operates equipment according to manufacturers instructions
  • Operates mechanical and electrical equipment correctly
  • Uses supplies judiciously and in a cost-effective manner
  • Replaces used supplies in a timely manner
  • Communicates/documents provision of equipment and supplies

 

Environment of Care:

  • Regulates temperature and humidity as indicated
  • Adheres to electrical safety policies and procedures
  • Monitors sensory environment
  • Maintains traffic patterns

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Nurse licensed in the state of Florida
  • Maintains BLS certification, ACLS certification preferred
